NAME: Dash

GENDER: Female

AGE: (2017) 10 years

WEIGHT: (2013) 30.7Kg (2014) 33.2Kg (2015) 39Kg (2016) 38.7Kg

ORIGIN: Windhoek

SIBLINGS: Ruff and Tumble (brothers)

COMPANIONS IN ENCLOSURE: Ruff and Tumble

REASON FOR CAPTIVITY: Captive reared, rehabilitated BUT UNSUCCESSFUL – now too habituated and too old for re-release. Ruff, Tumble and Dash were returned to the AfriCat Care Centre after an unsuccessful rehabilitation trial programme in 2012.

Dash is one of our cheetah ambassadors at AfriCat's Carnivore Care Centre.

Dash and her two brothers, Ruff and Tumble were picked up at a waterpoint on a farm when they were around a month old. They were very thin so the farmer assumed that something had happened to their mother. They were kept at the farm for 2 months before coming to AfriCat. Later the 3 siblings were grouped together with 2 other orphans called Baxer and Dizzy.

On 1 June 2012, the coalition of 5 cheetahs were released into the 20,000 hectare Okonjima Nature Reserve. One has to keep in mind that they had spent four years in captivity before their release. During this time they were dependent on humans for food, as well as water. In the beginning all five stayed together and moved in a northerly direction, but stuck to roads and did not venture too far away from the man-made paths.

On 5 June they made their first kill. Being a steenbok, it was definitely not enough food for five cheetahs.

On 17 June Baxter, always lagging behind and showing a 'weaker side' from the start, somehow became separated from the rest of the group and during the night was unfortunately killed by a spotted hyena. This marked the first change within the coalition.

On the 26 June, Dizzy left the coalition and headed off alone. Although they met up from time to time, she never stayed longer than a day before moving on again.

On the 12 July, Ruff, Tumble, and Dash killed a young warthog and after that a young oryx. We initially thought that now they would start to hunt more frequently, but unfortunately their successes were very sporadic.

On the 28 July, Ruff, Tumble, and Dash reached the area in the eastern section of the Reserve and that marked the end of any serious hunting attempts after only 60 days in the reserve. During the next 30 days they made only three more kills, but after the end of August they did not leave the area we call 'Copper dam' again.

We tried to move them away, using food as a lure, but within a day or two they were back in the same area. Two vicious fights between Ruff, Tumble & Dash and another group, the now dominant ITV Siblings, Coco, Spud & Bones were witnessed by our teams. One had to be broken up, and we suspect this was one of the main reasons this group of cheetahs felt dominated and because they could not migrate out of the area – they gave up and stuck to a section of the Park that the Siblings never go to since the death of their leader Hammer.

A decision was then made by the AfriCat Foundation to remove them and place them back into the Carnivore Care Centre, where they joined the 'Education Ambassador' group of carnivores. They had six months in the wild to learn how to hunt and become independent, but unfortunately it did not work out for this group. Ruff Tumble & Dash took the longest to try and hone in their skills since the rehabilitation program started in 2000, but were unfortunately unsuccessful. Dizzy is the only one in this group that is still in the wild!
