NAME: Electra

GENDER: Female

AGE: (2017) approx. 9 years

WEIGHT: (2014) 39Kg

BORN: 2008 in the Okonjima Nature Reserve

Electra is one of our leopards in the Okonjima Nature Reserve.

Electra was collared in May 2010 when she was approximately about 18 – 24 months old. She has grown into a beautiful cat and has become one of Okonjima’s most famous leopard ladies.

Due to the fact that she was initially very shy and cautious around cars and people, Electra was only seen rarely during the first two years. Since the beginning of 2013, Electra became more familiar and relaxed with company and was with 348 sightings in 2013, the most popular leopard among guides and guests.

In August 2013 Electra gave birth to two beautiful leopard cubs. Following her natural instincts, the first-time mother changed dens regularly to protect her cubs from predators and defended them against any possible danger that was coming along. What began so beautifully unfortunately came to a bitter end. After the final disappearance of cub number one in January, Electra’s second cub died unexpectedly in April 2014 and was positively tested for rabies after the body was taken for a full post mortem documentation. Even though Electra didn’t show any symptoms of an infection, we vaccinated her against rabies as a precaution a few days later.

Soon after the tragic loss, Electra was seen mating again with Nkosi and left her familiar territory for the mountains in the southern part of the reserve a few months ago – leading to the assumption that she might have given birth to her second litter. Surprisingly and contrary to our suspicion - Electra was observed mating with another male during the end of September which almost entirely rules out the possibility that she was hiding cubs somewhere in the mountain side. Electra’s collar was replaced in September due to the malfunction of her previous one. We are excited and looking forward to accompany Electra on her journey and to witness whatever the future holds for her.
