Team AfriCat, monitoring a recently rehabilitated carnivore in the Okonjima Nature Reserve

LARGE CARNIVORE TRACKING:

Okonjima guests are invited to participate on foot in the radio-tracking of the rehabilitated Cheetahs, wild Dog or Spotted Hyaenas on the Tracking Trail within the 20 000ha / 200km2 rehabilitation nature reserves, assisting Team AfriCat in the daily monitoring of previously captive carnivores, released into the park (2010 – 2012), giving them a chance in the wild to learn how to hone in their hunting skills.

Leopards are frequently seen, giving visitors an opportunity to observe these magnificent predators from our game-viewing vehicles. The leopards roam freely and catch their own prey within the 20 000ha / 200km2 rehabilitation nature reserves. These cats however, are notoriously people-shy and sightings are not guaranteed.

AfriCat North uses GPS-enabled collars to tracks lions.  The frequency of lions crossing the Etosha National Park (ENP) boundary into commercial farmlands, and the formation of independent populations outside of the park, is not known.  This study will monitor trans-boundary lion movement to determine how the conflict between lions and farmers along these boundaries could be minimised. The objectives behind the AfriCat North lion tracking project are to collar lions found outside of ENP boundaries and then to monitor movement of these lions. Data will be used to locate weaknesses in the Etosha boundary fence. The pride dynamics along the Etosha boundary will also be studied.

AfriCat uses radio-collars to research Leopard, Caracal and Hyaena density within the 20 000ha Island bound eco system, as well as for the monitoring of rehabilitated captive cheetahs.

Over the years AfriCat has tried many different collars, with different life spans, ranges etc etc. Strangely enough we still haven’t found the perfect Collar?!

AfriCat currently uses 4 types of radio-collars.

1. Telonics Collars
2. AWT Collars ( SA Based company)
3. Sirtrack ( Available at Global Supplies in SA)
4. Vectronic Aerospace GPS collar

1. The Telonics collars are the most powerful ones with 'range' but 'lifespan' is decreased and their collar-strap material is not favorable. (weak stitching) The antenna is internal and this causes a problem if you want to cut it to fit a thinner neck perfectly, as you will cut through the antenna. The other collars do not have this problem as their antenna doesn’t extend as far in the belting as the Telonics collars do. (On order: You need to know the exact diameter of your cats neck to get perfect fit) We currently use these on our spotted Hyenas and on large, adult leopards, as the max length of the collar is used - no cutting required.

MOD-500 Standard power would conservatively provide 5 years plus 40 days.
MOD-500 High power would conservatively provide 3 years plus 72 days.
MOD-400 Standard power would conservatively provide 2 years plus 119 days
MOD-400 High power would conservatively provide 1 year plus 159 days
MOD-335 Standard power would conservatively provide 1 year plus 160 days
MOD-335 High power would conservatively provide 322 days

2. The AWT Collars have the best belting, although it is an un-attractive orange colour. We have used dies to change the colour and make it look acceptable, yet the lifespan of the battery is not favourable at all when using it on 60 beats per minute (BPM). You get them in a D Cell and a C Cell battery.

3. SIRTRACK VHF COLLARS RANGE FROM BETWEEN ZAR 3 450 to ZAR 4 250 EX SHIPPING

Our standard request for new collars are the following:

Active pulse rate: 60 BPM ( makes tracking much easier than 30BPM, BUT you loose on battery life)
Mortality pulse rate: 120 BPM
Mortality delay time: 4 hours
Collar adjustment range: 370cm-570cm (allows us to use it on a cheetah, wild dog, hyena or leopard, whatever is longer we cut off)
Collar width: 25mm ( not to wide and is hidden well on the cat)

NB: We do not recommend using specific time settings. e.g 6hrs ON & 6hrs OFF. People do this to save battery life, but we have had  un favourable experiences, where the programmed times has caused the timing to change automatically resulting in that we lose the cats during tracking hours or if they escape and need to be found urgently, we can not track them.
